September meeting and AGM
Following an absence of two months during the coldest part of winter, our September meeting will allow us to welcome in the spring. We are fortunate to have Adam Muyt, our local Catchment Officer of the Murrumbidgee Catchment Management Authority to talk to us about the Box Gum Grassy Woodland project.
Some of you may have received a flyer in your letterboxes about this project.
To quote from the flyer: "Landholders are encouraged to apply for payments from the Australian Government to conserve box gum grassy woodland on their property for up to 15 years. Under the Caring for our Country initiative, these payments can cover all labour and capital costs involved and any losses from current production on your box gum grassy woodland site. Box gum grassy woodland provides habitat for at least 19 threatened species. Less than five per cent remains of this original vegetation and what survives is found among white box, yellow box and blakely's red gum. The initial stage of the Box Gum Grassy Woodland Project is now open to landholders within the Lachlan and Murrumbidgee catchments."
Box gum grassy woodland exists both as areas with tree cover and also derived grassland areas without tree cover. Adam will explain how to identify these areas, why the Catchment Management Authority is interested in locating them, and what it can do to help maintain them into the future.
After the meeting, we will hold our Annual General Meeting.
Looking forward to seeing all our Landcarers there, new and old! For more information, contact Don Fraser on 6236 3402
